Introduction to the novel

1865, Luxembourg.

Anger has been brewing amongst the celtic gods of Europe for some time now.

The reason is that the powers of the Old Continent are disintegrating, causing continuous political and civil tensions.

Some of them rebel against the emergence of new sovereign countries, which appear in their opinion as a sign of weakness and a factor of instability, causing endless wars. They believe that only the birth of a new European empire will promote unity, stability, and power.

For them, the time has therefore come to reorganize the map by spreading chaos at the most propitious place: in the Luxembourg regions of two young, newly independent states.

Recently split in two, Luxembourg is the home to various communities. Scattered on both sides of the Belgian-Luxembourg border, these peoples, speaking different languages, now yearn for peace, neutrality, happiness, own identity, and development.

To ravage the fields and to exterminate the cattle on a dark spring night would be perfect to nip these aspirations in the bud, to cause a famine and to weaken the population. Thus, the door would be wide open to the ambitions of France and Prussia. Then, each of these two belligerent neighbors would take the opportunity to seize the bruised territory, which would lead to a great war inflaming all of Europe.

Driven by the desire to see the great powers fight for European hegemony once and for all, the angry gods hope that the winner will eventually benefit from central authority over the Continent.

At the same time, they are nourishing the project to revive their cult and Celtic culture from the ashes, after the establishment of the new authority, and this would be from the Highlands to the Carpathians. They can no longer stand people's disinterest in Celtic gods and interest in monotheism, a faith with multiple branches.

The date for wreaking havoc has been chosen carefully: their plan will be implemented during the super blood moon of March 1866.

The night of the special eclipse is perfect in many ways…

The spring period is indeed the period of the first cereal crops.

In addition, many animals will have left their refuge to sleep outside: the destruction of animal life and soil by the gods will inevitably cause famine and chaos.

And above all, a blood moon will enhance the dark forces and violent behavior of the gods who will destroy the land.

In addition to the chosen time, they also determine the zone of destruction with precision: the countryside of Luxembourg and the Ardennes, between the Meuse and the Moselle.

However, the strategy is not unanimous amongst the deities. While some aspire to put an end to human desires for independence, others, on the contrary, advocate union and peace amongst states, however without sacrificing their own identity. Between these two clans of opponents, the third group struggles to pick a side.

Alas, the Machiavellian plan is the one which is unfortunately adopted, by lack of sufficient opposition.

A fervent supporter of peace, Arduinna, a very ancient and influential goddess, intends to protect her forest of Ardennes, full of life. She hatches a plan for how to do it...

Knowing well the supernatural creatures that she is sheltering between the Meuse and the Moselle, the goddess decides to awaken the strangest of the fairies whom she is carefully hiding in the meander of the Sauer, not far from Baschleiden.

Unfortunately, the creature has been sleeping for almost a millennium. Getting her out of her lethargy is not easy, and this can only be done during the week of Samhain, with the agreement of Lugh, the king of the celtic gods. But as nothing is impossible, the goddess obtains the precious support of her superior, and she ends up resurrecting...

...Melusine.

This Pictish princess engraved her name in European legends, the one who transformed herself every Saturday into a half-woman, half-snake creature. Being the source of several great French lineages, this fairy had finally founded Lucilinburhuc, before falling into a deep sleep.

Here she is now pulled from her coma, overwhelmed with a thousand questions, wondering why she is in the north of her Luxembourg land in an unknown era.

But there is no time to procrastinate. Arduinna immediately assigns an urgent and critical mission to her: gather some strange creatures wandering the area, and get ready for the battle of the blood moon against the angry gods.

Melusine, haunted by the problems of a past life, is forced to accept the mission despite a lot of doubts that assail her. The task is far from being obvious and there are many questions…

Why can't Arduinna protect her domain by herself?

Where exactly are the strange creatures hiding?

Will they agree to collaborate?

Will the group be strong and united enough to counter the evil attack?

Not to mention the most basic question of all: is the princess emotionally stable enough to face the coming challenges? The weight of her past could slow her down and prevent her from fulfilling her new destiny.

While the princess has only the winter to prepare her mission, the first snowflakes are already falling on the river Sauer...
